General and Fire Safety Rules
MICROBIAL AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY LAB SUPPORT SERVICES
GENERAL SAFETY RULES:
- In the case of any injury or spill, notify your teaching assistant.
- Smoking, eating or drinking are not allowed in the laboratory.
- Long hair must be tied back at all times.
- Lab coats must be worn at all times (if required by your instructor).
- Remember, you are cultivating pathogenic bacteria so do not put your
fingers on your face or in your mouth and do not chew on your pencils.
- If you have an open sore or cut on your hands notify a Teaching
Assistant
- Mouth pipeting is not allowed in the teaching lab. Pipet aids are
available when needed.
- Disinfect your work area before and after the lab period with 2% lysol.
- Wash your hands before and after the lab period.
- There is an eyewash station, drench shower, fire extinguisher, and first aid kit available in the laboratory.
- Bunsen burners should be turned off when not in use. Do not put plastic bottles or paper products near the bunsen burner. Be aware of other students bunsen burners when passing by their work area. Remember, alcohol is flammable.
FIRE SAFETY:
On your way out of the building after the first class, note the exits in the
building and the locations of the fire alarms. Fire alarms are usually
located near the stairwells.
- If you should catch on fire:
use the emergency drench shower to extinguish the flames -or-
if you or a student are across the room from the drench shower
STOP DROP AND ROLL to extinguish the flames.
- If there is a fire in the room and you feel you can put the fire out
do so with an extinguisher:
Remember the word PASS for:
PULL the pin
AIM low
SQUEEZE the handle
SWEEP from side to side
In all cases,
get out of the room,
close the door to the fire area,
pull the fire alarm and
dial 911 to report the fire.
- Always evacuate the room when an alarm sounds.
